Description of Duties: Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor. 60% Operates, maintains, and/or repairs pumps, valves, chlorinators, chemical feeders, compressors, laboratory equipment and computer monitoring systems to effectively support the ongoing operation of a water treatment plant. Performs all daily laboratory testing and equipment calibration required to meet Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regulations and provides proper daily chemical dosage to maintain normal plant operations. Monitors and interprets visual and aural gauges, meters, and sensing devices and takes necessary corrective action measures, if required. 10% Oversees inmate workers in the performance of janitorial/maintenance work details while assigned to the water treatment plant. Monitors inmate movement during operational hours and processes sign-out sheets. Maintains a safe and secure work environment. Conducts searches of inmate workers and work areas for contraband. Ensures tool control and caustic/toxic supply inventory records are maintained in accordance with applicable regulations and policies. 10% Performs minor mechanical repairs and regular preventative maintenance and testing for the water treatment plant, as well as, the remainder of the institution’s water system, which includes a reservoir, pressure reducing valve stations, fire hydrants, pumps, storage tank, source springs, and numerous miles of underground piping. Maintains an on-going leak detection program along with regular established preventative maintenance programs. Performs periodic visual dam inspection. 10% Maintains screen chamber up stream of pumping station and any associated equipment. 5% Ensures that the source water is safe for use and the treated drinking water makes it safely to SCI Dallas. Performs daily water system security checks. 5% Performs other related duties. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: 1. Exercise care, custody, and control over inmates 2. Apply physical force and intervention when appropriate and necessary 3. Lead and oversee inmates in the standard principles and practices used in the operation and maintenance of a water treatment plant 4. Reach, bend, stoop, pull, push, kneel, lift, climb, and grasp 5. Be mobile over all types of physical surfaces and levels 6. Spend prolonged periods of time working indoors as well as outdoors in all weather conditions 7. Spend prolonged periods of time standing or walking 8. Work all shifts and posts as required by operational necessities and emergencies 9. Work mandatory overtime in compliance with provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, with little or no advance notice, whether on or off duty at the time of notification 10. Maintain regular and reliable attendance 11. Use and maintain various equipment and tools used in the maintenance, operation, and repair of a water treatment plant 12. Operate basic office equipment 13. Maintain an active PA non-commercial Class C driver’s license or equivalent in accordance with assigned work 14. Maintain an active Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification issued by the PA State Board for Certification of Water and Wastewater Systems Operators in accordance with assigned work 15. Properly wear all portions of assigned uniform 16. Effectively communicate verbally and in writing 17. Establish and maintain effective working relationships 18. Hear and identify sounds (voices, whistle, buzzer, lock release, scuffling, sudden quiet) 19. Visually observe inmates’ activities 20. Administer emergency medical assistance to both inmates and staff 21. Attend and participate in all mandatory training and/or testing 22. Travel as required |
