Position Purpose:

This position is assigned to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, Eastern Division, Bureau of Historic Sites and Museums, and is responsible for supervising and scheduling PHMC and Associate guide staff and one PHMC maintenance position; planning, coordinating, researching, and conducting daily tours and programming (both in-person and "virtual"); overseeing the accounting of daily admissions and monthly reporting; and assisting with Museum housekeeping, groundskeeping, and security work.


Description of Duties:

Custodial Guide Supervisor (CGS) researches and conducts tours of the Museum, presentations on historical subjects, and "virtual" (recorded and live-streamed) programs; interprets historic locomotives and rolling stock; assists with school tours and group tours; and supervises the PHMC and Associate guide staff in performing these same tasks.

CGS works in concert with the Museum Educators in the training of PHMC and Associate guide staff and volunteers in the regular program of interpretation and education programs, as well as relevant safety and behavioral expectations.

CGS develops, posts, and maintains a bi-weekly schedule for PHMC and Associate guide staff and one PHMC maintenance position.

The full operation of the admissions desk is the responsibility of the CGS position, which includes the courteous reception of visitors; sale of tickets by cash, check, or credit card; cash out at the end of each day; visitor orientation and location of the restrooms and other amenities and activities; other visitor services, including answering visitor questions and phone or email inquiries; and managing the personnel who also perform these tasks.

CGS assures the timely completion of daily and end-of-month reporting as it pertains to Museum admissions, according to established Commission policies and procedures.

CGS monitors the work and performance of PHMC and Associate guide staff, and one PHMC maintenance position, mainly through daily observation, coaching, and annual employee performance reviews and mid-year reviews.

CGS completes the necessary forms for anticipated compensatory time or overtime and forwards same to supervisor for submission to the Bureau Office.

CGS performs basic custodial and housekeeping tasks (such as the cleaning of restrooms, sweeping and mopping of floors, and the cleaning of windows and surfaces), the dusting and cleaning of exhibits and collections (such as locomotives and rail cars), light groundskeeping work, and minor maintenance duties, and supervises the PHMC and Associate guide staff and one PHMC maintenance position in performing these same tasks.

CGS stays current on, and assists with the implementation of, the latest approved methods and best practices of cleaning and sanitizing for contagious illnesses and other health and safety matters and passes this information along to PHMC and Associate guide staff and one PHMC maintenance position.

CGS assists with opening and closing procedures for the Museum and ensures the Museum is secured properly during each workday assigned.

CGS assists in the patrolling of the buildings, grounds, and exhibits, and in the monitoring of fire and security alarm systems, to protect and guard persons and property from fire, theft, trespass, or other hazards, in accordance with prescribed rules and procedures.

CGS prepares accident and incident reports, with any accompanying witness statements and other related documentation, and forwards them to supervisor.

CGS operates safety and security equipment, including fire and security alarm systems, radios, flashlights, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, etc.

CGS helps coordinate the activities of volunteers performing tasks associated with visitor services, working in concert with the Associate volunteer coordinator.

CGS assists with set-up, tear-down, and security at special events, facility rentals, and other Museum functions, both during normal business hours and after hours.

CGS drives site vehicles or car to various areas of the property or off-site to pick-up or drop-off supplies, artifacts, or other museum-related materials.

CGS is responsible to be familiar with PHMC general safety rules and safety rules specific to this position; for working in a safe manner and following all PHMC safety rules; immediately report all workplace injuries or incidents to their supervisor; and to immediately correct any safety hazards in the work area or report same to supervisor.

CGS adheres to PHMC core values and behaviors and exhibits those behaviors when conducting work duties.

CGS performs other related duties as assigned by the site administrator.

Responds to customer inquiries. Makes decisions regarding bi-weekly staffing schedules and daily assignments. Makes decisions regarding visitor services and special tour and programming requests, consulting with supervisor in extreme circumstances. Works as the supervisor in charge on weekends.
