Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

The successful candidate will have a demonstrated interest in, knowledge of, and passion for Pennsylvania history and public history; and the skills and experience necessary to assist with collecting, preserving, and interpreting collections associated with Pennsylvania military, industrial, political, popular culture, and community and domestic life history. Work will be in accordance with the State Museum’s mission, and goals and objectives established by the senior history curator.

Description of Duties:
Describe in detail the duties and responsibilities assigned to this position. Descriptions should include the major end result of the task. Example: Types correspondence, reports, and other various documents from handwritten drafts for review and signature of the supervisor.

Assists with managing collections across various thematic sections. Includes advising on accessioning and deaccessioning and writing formal recommendations; identifying, inventorying, photographing, and cataloging objects; overseeing and participating in their packing and transportation; researching objects; physical care of objects; determining their proper storage; organizing and managing the record-keeping system and section- and collections-specific reference materials; arranging for the loan of objects and soliciting the donation of objects and funds. Applies thorough knowledge of professional collections management

Assists with, or as assigned does the following in relation to exhibit development: writing and editing of exhibit scripts and publications; implements exhibition plans including all aspects of working with exhibit management staff, fabrication crews, and object installation. Assist senior curators in developing short- and long-term exhibit plans.

Provides answers to public inquiries concerning history and related artifacts of Pennsylvania across the spectrum of collections represented at the State Museum

Work may include supervising curators, interns, volunteers, administrative staff, and contract staff

Work is performed under the administrative direction of the Senior History curator and in conjunction with the Curator of Military and Industrial History.

Performs related work as required.

The incumbent is responsible to be familiar with PHMC general safety rules and safety rules specific to this position; for working in a safe manner and following all PHMC safety rules; immediately reporting all workplace injuries or incidents to their supervisor, and immediately correcting any safety hazards in the work area or report same to supervisor.

Decision Making:
Describe the types of decisions made by the incumbent of this position and the types of decisions referred to others. Identify the problems or issues that can be resolved at the level of this position, versus those that must be referred to the supervisor. Example: In response to a customer inquiry, this work involves researching the status of an activity and preparing a formal response for the supervisor’s signature.

Makes recommendations on what objects to accession, loan, deaccession, for referral to other PHMC staff. Decides how objects will be documented, including cataloging and inventorying, within PHMC guidelines. Makes decisions on the physical care of specific objects. Assists with developing or writing scripts and related materials for exhibits. Helps maintain program schedules and deadlines. Oversees the work of interns or volunteers in collections.

Experience:

Knowledge of American and Pennsylvania history, with reference to social, cultural, military, political, and industrial/technological developments as they relate to the collection and care of artifacts and objects reflecting such developments.
