Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This professional position within the Pennsylvania State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), a bureau of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (Commission), is responsible for the Pennsylvania Archaeological Site Survey program (PASS). This includes development, processing and management of records pertaining to archaeological historic properties through public outreach and the promotion and facilitation of new archaeological survey and site recordation, research, and evaluation, with the goal of maintaining the integrity of archaeological site and survey information in the SHPO data management system (PA-SHARE) in order to assist the SHPO, other agencies, and the public in evaluating the archaeological resources within the Commonwealth.

Description of Duties:

Develops and implements a plan for the Pennsylvania Archaeological Site Survey.

Provides information and assistance to citizens and agencies involved in the identification and survey of archaeological resources to prepare resource information and documentation for inclusion in PA-SHARE, the SHPO’s data management system.

Works with the public and local preservation partners on developing/updating site recordation methodology. This many include site assessment visits.

Provides training and support on recordation techniques of sites, surveys, and projects through both the mobile and desktop applications and dashboards through PA-SHARE and PA-Surveyor. This includes helping keeping the online help up-to-date.

Reviews, accepts and reconciles archaeological resource data and independent survey proposals submitted through PA-SHARE and PA-Surveyor.

Serves as a Triage reviewer for PA-SHARE on a regular rotating basis.

Develops and provides public information about cultural resources through research, analysis, and development of web content, conference and educational programs, and periodic reports.

Assists in fulfilling the SHPO’s Geographic Information System (GIS) needs including cartography, data management, and ensures the quality and utility of spatial data and products.

Assists the SHPO with developing and maintaining a long-term data management and GIS vision and strategy, especially as it relates to PA-SHARE and Surveyor.

Plans and conducts or causes to be conducted archaeological survey projects to collect new archaeological data through the OSM Funded field investigations and SHPO proactive survey efforts. This may include guiding and assisting interns or other researchers or contactors.

Plans and conducts projects to analyze legacy data. This can result in updating information to meet current standards and needs, and/or providing new interpretations. This includes historic research and evaluation and may include guiding and assisting interns or other researchers.

Coordinates archaeological collections data management with The State Museum of Pennsylvania.

Evaluates requests for permits to conduct archaeological investigation on state owned lands in accordance with § 506(d) the State History Code.

Participates in the evaluation of the significance of cultural resources and their eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

Designs and produces publication-quality maps and other visual products for internal use, for reports, and for external distribution.

Performs others duties as required to maintain the SHPO’s cultural resource database.

Adheres to Commonwealth and Commission general safety rules and any specific to this position and immediately corrects any safety hazards in the work area and report same to supervisor.

Develop content for public presentations, including GIS-generated maps and maps and mapping products.

Plan archaeological surveys and approve methodologies.

Evaluate data submitted by outside organizations to determine what needs to be done to make it compatible with PA-SHARE. This would include evaluation of the completeness and accuracy of the information, its adherence to National Register and state guidelines, and the compatibility of its formatting to the PA-SHARE.

Evaluate requests for archaeological permits and prepare responses for supervisor’s signature.

Evaluate legacy data for its relevance and capability with current standards.
