Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

Provide non-professional nursing care to the residents and their quarters in a Department of Military and Veterans Affairs veteran’s home ensuring adherence to HIPAA standards.


Description of Duties:

Under the direction of licensed professional staff the Nurse Aide performs the following duties:

Observe residents’ conditions and report changes to professional nursing staff. Record daily care performed for the residents on the appropriate forms and the approved electronic medical record.

Introduce residents to roommates, other residents, and to staff; records all personal belongings brought in or acquired at a later date, prepares clothes for marking; and familiarizes residents with the physical layout of the facility.

Gather and report pertinent data such as vital signs and weight. Collect specimens such as urine, feces, or sputum. Ensures documentation complies with all requirements.

Provide input into the development of patient care plans. May attend nursing unit conferences and actively participate in the planning of resident care.

Perform or assist residents perform activities of daily living (ADL’s) such as bathing, shampooing, grooming, shaving, manicuring, pedicuring, and toileting by use of toilet, bedpan, or urinal; makes beds, gives back rubs, and re-positions residents.

Assist residents with walking, exercising, and moving in and out of bed.

Transport and position residents by wheelchair, geri chair, stretcher, etc. in accordance with Department policy. Escort residents to outside appointments as necessary.

Distribute and collect meal trays, feed residents and assist with meals and nourishments as necessary. Distribute water and between-meal nourishments, assist with retraining feeding patterns.

Assist with providing restorative care to residents on a daily basis.

Apply safety devices, anti-embolism stockings, lotions, creams, ointments, hot and cold compresses, bags, and bottles as directed.

Clean medical equipment such as Nebulizers, IV Pumps, Glucometers, Stethoscopes, Feeding Pumps, etc. as needed.

Maintain a safe environment in the resident’s room by removing and addressing hazards such as electrical cords, personal effects, and other obstacles.

Assist residents during scheduled activities and programs as directed.

Attend conferences, meetings, and seminars as well as all mandatory in-service training programs as part of ongoing education. Satisfactorily complete all required competencies.

May monitor the smoke room to ensure safety of residents.

Support the facility QAPI efforts by attending all assigned QAPI training and following established policies and procedures in support of QAPI. Participate in PIP teams as assigned. Share ideas for improvement in the organization; support QAPI efforts both verbally and non-verbally, including adjusting performance and practice in accordance with QAPI initiatives and findings.

Performs work in accordance with the DMVA general safety rules and safety rules for this position. Immediately reports all workplace injuries or incidents to the supervisor; and/or immediately corrects any safety hazards in the work area or reports same to supervisor.

Perform other related duties as required.

Follow universal precautions. Use required personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, gowns, goggles, face shield, etc.

Essential Functions

 1. Use various medical equipment, and transports and escorts residents on and off the premises
 2. Lift/move/re-position residents with assistance as needed
 3. Gather data, collect and record vital signs and specimens, report changes in resident behavior

 5. Perform ADL’s and participate in rehabilitative programs for residents
 6. Wear protective equipment such as mask, gloves, and goggles
 7. Respond to alarms, calls for assistance and emergency situations
