Position Purpose:
Describe the primary purpose of this position and how it contributes to the organization’s objectives. Example: Provides clerical and office support within the Division to ensure its operations are conducted efficiently and effectively. 

This is a temporary internship position to provide career-applicable experience in environmental education and interpretation-related aspects of Pennsylvania State Park operations; shadowing and assisting staff in various areas of bureau environmental education and interpretation programming (e.g., lesson plan development, delivery of education programs, educational program support, etc.); interpretive planning and projects to gain knowledge in those areas and to take responsibility for the completion of assigned project tasks. Work and educational experience will be weighted toward individuals pursuing studies that relate to education, history, and natural sciences.

ORIENTATION
Intern will be oriented to the Outdoor Programming Services Division’s rules and regulations, work rules and policies, emergency protocols, the RCSOB’s safety program/procedures, the division’s core principles as well as the Department’s and the Bureau’s mission statements.

EXPERIENCES
Intern will be exposed to program and/or non-personal interpretive media project development within Pennsylvania State Parks including, but not limited to, observing programs and non-personal media development meetings, conducting background research, developing outlines, drafting lesson plans and/or interpretive text, and presenting programs or reviewing drafts of non-personal media. They will be exposed to professional training as it relates to non-formal education, cultural and natural resources, and non-personal interpretive media. Intern will gain experience assisting OPS Division staff in planning, preparing, and conducting trainings for both staff and/or other non-formal and classroom teachers. Intern will attend OPS Division and Bureau of State Parks meetings as they pertain to job experience and support project completion. They will assist in the creation of virtual content to support educational programs conducted by OPS staff or classroom teachers. Example experiences may include developing or leading webinars, creating interactive virtual content, or assisting with creating and editing videos. They will assist the OPS Division in day-to-day operations consisting of document storage, research, program preparation, data entry, or other required tasks.

PROJECT/PROGRAM DESIGN AND PLANNING
Intern will assist in the planning, researching, and development of educational lesson plans or non-personal interpretive media projects. Assigned projects may be geared toward an intern’s course of study, interests, or projected career path, so long as the project fulfills the stated “Position Purpose.” They will assist park staff and be given the opportunity to work with field educators during the development process. They will have access to varied Departmental software programs, equipment, and expertise to aid in this planning and development work.

The 2024 internship will focus heavily on historical and cultural research for both interpretive programming and nonpersonal media.

RECORD KEEPING
Intern will keep weekly logs of activity and accomplishments for supervisor’s review (if keeping a weekly log as part of educational requirements, there is no need to duplicate). They will maintain notebook or other implement to take detailed notes when supervisor, a Section Chief, or the Division Chief assigns tasks or projects; keeping these notes readily available to reference when needed. They will assist with records retention, data compilation and entry, and monthly report writing.

Interns earning educational credit: They must complete all forms and reporting as required by educational program within established timelines. They must notify their supervisor of established/upcoming deadlines, providing supervisor a reasonable amount of time to meet deadlines in completing forms, reporting, and evaluations required of the Bureau.

Intern will present a professional image to the general public through adherence to the Bureau’s mission, professional language and conduct, uniform appearance, vehicle cleanliness and preparedness, a base knowledge of the bureau and its operations, a confident and helpful demeanor, show initiative, verbal and telephone skills, and practiced visitor service skills.

Within the framework of assigned duties and projects each week, intern will be expected to make decisions and show initiative with the best use of time and independent scheduling of activities with other staff. Supervisor will review all work-related products prior to their implementation, posting, printing, etc.
